Hawthorn Expansion

In December 2007, Wake Robin added a long-term care wing and 37 new cottages to the Community. The cottage area, called Hawthorn, fits snugly into a wooded area near the entrance to the Community.

The tidy neighborhood includes 1150 square foot one bedroom cottages, 1350 square foot two bedroom cottages and 1632 square foot stand-alone cottages. Each home has:

  • a den
  • two full baths
  • walk-in closet in the master bedroom
  • a full kitchen
  • laundry facilities
  • a deck
  • an attached garage

The cottages were constructed with consultation from Efficiency Vermont, using environmentally-friendly building materials, and energy efficient appliances.

Construction began with a major tree salvage operation that included the temporary transplanting of more than 300 native trees and shrubs from the building site. Some of the largest trees, including beech, butternut, hickory, ironwood, oak and maple were up to 30 feet high. The salvaged nursery plants thrived and were moved back into their new homes in the Hawthorn grounds in the fall of 2007.

In these new cottages, as with all Wake Robin residences, for those individuals who qualify, approximately 38 percent of the one-time entrance fee and the monthly fee are deductible medical expenses for federal income tax purposes. And, of course, life care is included.
