Let us introduce you to Wake Robin in the Fall. Beautiful colors on the trees, crisp bright days with blue skies. We enjoy this time of year with foliage trips and a calendar filled with creative programs and events such as the Annual Fall Festival. A main highlight of Wake Robin’s Fall Festival this year was the apple pie contest… 9 delicious apple pies! Tough job for the poor judges, having to sample all the entries from residents and staff! The winning recipe is below.
The Festival also features the annual Resident/Staff talent competition, “Wake Robin Has Talent!” –clearly a stepping stone to American Idol! From guitar-playing cooks to the resident kazoo choir (“The Famed Kazooziaks!), what the show lacked in talent it far made up for in entertainment value—and talent, too. The Festival planners pulled off another great community-wide event! Autumn at Wake Robin continues with a variety of seasonal programs. Residents get an insider’s perspective on Burlington’s Haunted History presented by Queen City Ghost Walk founder Thea Lewis – how timely! An all-Beethoven performance by renowned pianist Paul Orgel, and an off-campus tour of the Webb Estate’s Brick House are just a few of Wake Robin’s offerings this fall. The grounds have been gorgeous this week—gold and yellow under deep blue fall skies. If you’d like to come see for yourself, just call Nancy (264-5103), MaryBeth (264-3341) or Ami (264-5111) to schedule a visit! And now (drumroll…) the award-winning pie recipe: Crust for a 2-crust pie: Using a fork or pastry blender, cut 2 ½ cups flour, 1 tsp. salt, 2 tbs. sugar with ¾ cups chilled butter, ½ cup shortening, 6-8 Tbs. ice water. Roll out ½ the dough and put in 8” or 9” pie pan. Roll the remaining dough in a ball, cover, and refrigerate both for 1 hour. September 30, 2010 |
